It is with great sadness and disbelief that I write this letter. Vanessa was a strong, vibrant, intelligent and compassionate woman who was taken away from us all much too soon. Her integrity, commitment, drive and dedication were unquestionable. A humanist to the core; she was pro-forest and pro-people, and her much needed research sought to find the balance necessary for sustainable development among extractivist communities in Amazonia. Amazonia, her loved ones, friends and colleagues as well as the communities she worked with will surely feel her loss. My deepest heart-felt condolences go out to her family.
